Buddy Up Tennis is a non-profit program dedicated to breaking barriers to provide adaptive programming for individuals with Down syndrome. It started with tennis, but has grown and continues to grow into various routes and categories with meaningful and significant impact. The annual benefit gala is responsible for over half of the annual revenue so there is a big push to make it as spectacular as possible.
The 2020 theme was "Something Extraordinary"— a celebration of the uniqueness and capabilities that those with Down syndrome have and that they each have the capability to beat obstacles and achieve something great.
Much of the foundational ideas and theoretical vision had been established before I joined the project, so my role was to take the concept and the athletes' photoshoots and provide art direction for the entire event. From the 8ft posters at the entrance to the signage throughout the venue, from the programs and presentation to the table decorations and posters for each individual athlete, this was one of the largest and most rewarding projects I've ever been a part of.
This was one giant lesson with timing and planning for everyone involved. We were fortunate enough to have a relationship with a printing that had the capability to produce quickly, but no one on either end enjoys that last minute rush. So in preparation for the upcoming year (given public gatherings are permissible), about 12hrs was put into creating an in-depth spreadsheet outlining each of the assets with links to samples as well as specs and other details. Clarifying what's needed and when typically makes for a much smoother process for all parties.
